Brexit Bill receives royal assent

After much delay and countless debates, Britain’s Brexit bill officially became law on Thursday, thereby removing the last obstacle to UK’s exit from the European Union in just over a week. Around three and a half years have passed since UK had actually opted to leave the EU through the June 2016 referendum. The Deputy Speaker Nigel Evans announced in the House of Commons that the Withdrawal Agreement Act had received royal assent from Queen Elizabeth II. “At times, it felt like we would never cross the Brexit finish line, but we’ve done it,” Prime Minister Boris Johnson said. The EU Parliament must now ratify the Brexit divorce deal before Jan. 31, which is the scheduled Brexit date.
