Cut unsafe food level to less than 1%: FSSAI

Food Safety and Standards Authority (FSSAI) Chairman Pawan Kumar Aggarwal has urged the stakeholders in food & beverage industry to trim the level of ‘unsafe food’ to less than 1% or negligible levels within the next four years.

Citing a survey, he said at a CII event, “The sampling was done in an area where safety was a concern. The level of 3.7 per cent is low when compared to media reports of 60-70 per cent. In next four years, can we bring unsafe food level to less than one per cent or negligible level, while non-standard food to 5 per cent and mis-branded food to 2 per cent?”

Greater surveillance, improved and targeted enforcement, review of food standards, building capacity of primary producers are the strategies to do this.
