India to add 80 mn online shoppers by 2025

Affordable smartphones and low-cost data plans have enabled more online presence and rising e-commerce sales.

The thriving e-commerce market in India added 125 million online consumers in the last three years. As per the report by marketing data and analytics company – Kantar, the domestic e-commerce market is riding on the back of affordable smartphones and low-cost data plans.

This in turn has encouraged the leading retail and consumer goods makers to increase their investments in the e-commerce market. The report predicted that India would be adding another 80 million shoppers by 2025. 

According to the report, India currently has around 530 million active social media users, and their number is expected to reach 600 million by 2025. The surging online presence is expected to improve e-commerce sales. The report noted, 77 million buyers shopping through social media platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, and social-commerce sites in 2021, and this trend is expected to continue in future.

Soumya Mohanty, Managing Director, and Chief client officer, of South Asia, Kantar Insights Division said, “India is digitizing at an unprecedented rate. Women and rural areas will drive this in the future, and it will grow more cross-generational. As consumers spend more time online, it is critical to have a comprehensive understanding of how to reach, sell to, communicate with, and establish brands for them.”
