Genetically modified foods (GM foods) also known as genetically engineered food (GE foods) are food items produced from organisms with modified DNAs through methods of genetic engineering. Some of the most common GM foods include Soy, Canola, Potatoes, Lettuce etc.

As per the latest guidelines from FSSAI, the food items with 1% or more GM content are to be packed and labeled as “contains genetically modified organisms”.

The draft stated “No person shall manufacture, pack, store, sell, market or otherwise distribute or import any food or food ingredient produced from GMOs”.

The draft further added that in the case of GMOs used as food or source material for production, a clearance from the Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) is to be submitted. Additionally, if GMOs are being used as seeds or for cultivation, the applicant shall parallelly submit an application to the GEAC for compliance to Rules 1989 (Environment Ministry notified rules).
