Foundation stone laid for first multi-modal logistics park

Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has laid the foundation stone for India’s first multi-modal logistics park in Assam today. As an initiative under the Bharatmala Pariyojna, the park will be constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 694 crore according to an official statement. It will provide direct connectivity through air, road, rail and waterways.

The government is targeting the development of multi-modal logistics parks (MMLP) at strategic locations, which will enable efficient inter-modal (road, rail, waterway and air) freight movement and formalised interface amongst logistics service providers, service users and regulators. It is expected to provide a much-needed impetus towards driving logistics costs to less than 10% of the country’s GDP. The Transport Ministry is planning 35 MMLPs to account for 50% of the road freight in the country.
