US reports India’s hike on 28 goods to WTO

The US has filed a complaint against India’s move to raise customs duties on 28 American goods, alleging that the decision is incompatible with the international trade norms. The US argued that India does not enforce these duties on like products originating in the territory of any other WTO member nation. It also held the view that the additional duties levied by India “appear to nullify or impair the benefits accruing to the US directly or indirectly” under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT).

The GATT, 1994, is a WTO pact, signed by all member countries of the multi-lateral trade body that aims to promote trade by reducing or eliminating trade barriers such as customs duties.
