No reason to cheer for onion farmers

India’s onion planters have little to rejoice about despite the soaring prices of this commodity. One reason for their sorrow is that their crop from last season was spoiled by floods. However, some farmers from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka have started harvesting onion before crop maturing to benefit from this tide of high prices. However, high moisture in fields has stunted onion bulbs’ growth, reducing the yield by up to 40%. Some farmers also estimate that prices are unlikely to rise further, and have already started to drop due to this development.
