New policy to make India an electronics export hub

Electronics and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who chaired a day-long meeting with chiefs of electronics companies, said that the government is working on catapulting India into a hub for exports of electronics and components. An inter-ministerial panel has already been set up by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) to examine the ways in which handset manufacturing can be boosted within one month in India.

Industry officials expressed a number of concerns related to the discontinuation of incentives, lack of focus on components, skilling and infrastructure issues in the meeting. Top executives from 54 companies including Apple, Samsung and Nokia, along with 8 industry bodies and officials from the ministries of telecom and commerce participated in the discussion.
