Indian cashew producers eye Chinese market

Changing consumption patterns in China have led Indian cashew producers to regard China as a potential market. However, there is one stumbling block in this development – unlike Vietnam & Cambodia, India does not enjoy tariff concessions and free border trade. Currently, India has to pay a 10% import duty on imported cashew kernels. Therefore, Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) has urged the Department of Commerce to coax China into waving off the import duty on the grounds of the growing market potential, India’s negligible share in imports, excess processing capacity and rural employment generation.

Some of the other prominent export markets for Indian cashew producers include UAE, Saudi Arabia, the Netherlands, Japan & Germany.
