India for removal of trade-distorting farm subsidies

India has called for removal of trade-distorting subsidies on agriculture and also sought to continue the existing regime of differential treatment to developing countries by World Trade Organization members, according to the commerce ministry. These issues were raised by the Hon’ble Commerce & Industry Minister Shri Piyush Goyal during the World Economic Forum at Davos. Furthermore, the Minister also called for a permanent resolution for public stockholding for food security purposes. Emphasising on the need for a significant outcome in Afghanistan, the Minister also gave his views on the issue of fisheries subsidies. He said that sustainable use of marine resources has to be ensured, , adding, “Adequate policy space, to ensure a decent standard of living for subsistence-level fishermen, by modernising their fishing fleet and expanding their fishing capacity, is a critical outcome for India.”
