India-domiciled cos filed 1300+ patents in US in 2018-19

A recent report by Nasscom, based on data extracted from Questel Orbit Patent Database, has disclosed that over 1,300 patents were filed by India firms in the US in 2018-19 across domains. The report is based on provisional data, as available on January 31, 2020, and excludes some of the patent applications filed for 2018 and 2019.

In total 1,338 patents were filed in 2018-19, of which 59.4% belonged to disciplines like computer technology, communication technology and AI & the top IT companies to file for patents were Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro and HCL. The top domain areas in non-tech patents were chemistry and chemical compositions, pharmaceuticals, and mechanical and structural inventions, with Reliance Industries Ltd, Sun Pharma, Welspun and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd being the major filers.

The report observed that AI continues to lead in terms of total patents filed under emerging technology, while cloud computing patents led in terms of growth.
