DPIIT issues norms for steel imports

The Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has introduced quality control orders to curb imports of some substandard steel items and cables. According to these orders, these products will need to conform to specified standards and carry the standard mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Both orders will be brought into effect from August 1. The products include steel tubes, tubulars and other wrought steel fitting, steel tubes for structural purposes and water wells.

The government is also working to develop technical regulations such as safety and quality standards for over 350 products in order to control imports of non-essential items.
