Commerce Minister highlights crisis in WTO

Addressing the World Trade Organization Ministerial Meeting in New Delhi, Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Suresh Prabhu, opined that “the crisis in the Appellate Body threatens to bring back power play to the multilateral trading system”.  He further observed that the “questions being raised on S&DT are controversial and extremely divisive.”

The S&DT (Special & Differential Treatment) provisions are flexibilities provided to developing member countries in the WTO, such as higher domestic support for the farm sector & longer time period for implementing binding commitments.
