Tractor sales back with a bang in April 2022

As the sales of rabi crops saw a positive growth, along with normalisation of raw material and labour shortage seen last year, the demand for farm equipment picked up in India. Wheat, barley and small millets saw better realisation in the last two months improved. Tractor sales in the country rose by 41% yoy in April 2022, after facing a decline for five months.

A new benchmark has been made by selling over 89,000 tractor units in April 2022 compared with the previous high of around 66,700 units in April 2019, Hemant Sikka, president of farm equipment at at Mahindra & Mahindra, noted. The tractor manufacturers have estimated that the production will increase by 25-30% in the next two months, amidst an expectation of a normal monsoon for the upcoming Kharif season, to meet demand and are accordingly gearing up for this.

“Rabi harvesting has progressed well across markets. Amidst the ongoing global situation and high exports of wheat from India, demand for Indian wheat crop has been very high leading to farmers receiving higher prices for the crop in the open market over MSP, Oilseeds too are fetching higher prices in the domestic market,” Sikka stated.
