Programme to impart skills to construction workers
On Monday, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs launched a scheme to skill 100,000 construction workers. Called National Initiative for Promoting Upskilling of Nirman workers (NIPUN), this scheme will be implemented by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC), a nodal agency under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE).
Around 80,000 workers will be re-skilled and about 14,000 will be trained with new skills. The courses are aligned with National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) and will be imparted at accredited and affiliated training centers. Urban Development Minister, Hardeep Singh Puri stated that the construction industry has been investing in skilling but has not spread horizontally across the industry so this step has been taken by the ministry to expand and cover a larger number of such workforce.
Workers will get the Kaushal Bima, three-year accidental insurance with coverage of Rs 2 lakh, digital skills such as cashless transactions, and the BHIM app. They will also be benefited from the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) scheme and Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board (BOCW).
