MOCI mulls ways to make India production hub

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry is brainstorming hard to identify certain key sectors — like capital goods, leather and chemicals — that could establish India as a global manufacturing hub. This comes in the wake of a recent statement by Commerce & Industry Minister, Shri Piyush Goyal that in the post-COVID era, there is going to a be perceptible change in the global supply-chains, and Indian industrialists and exporters should be looking to capture significant share in the world trade.

“There are 12 champion sectors which can be looked upon. These include modular furniture, toys, food processing like ready-to-eat food, agro-chemicals, textiles like man-made fibres, air conditioners, capital goods, pharma and auto components,” stated a source familiar with this development.

For this purpose, the ministry is in talks with stakeholders from industry chambers and constituted groups and sub-groups to identify those sectors which have the potential to become global winners. According to sources, the core group would chalk out specific implementable policy based on issues like technological capability, employment potential, and global as well as domestic demand.
