MNRE coaxes states to support manufacturers

The Ministry for New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has coaxed states to incentivize setting up designated manufacturing hubs in India, at a time when renewable energy manufacturers are planning to move out of China. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, these renewable energy producers want to to diversify their supply chains.

The ministry sent a letter to the states asking state governments to identify land parcels of 50-500 acres for setting up the parks, which shall cater to both domestic and international needs. These equipment include silicon ingots and wafers, solar cells and modules, wind equipment and other ancillary items such as back sheet, glass, steel frames, inverters and batteries. “In a time when many companies are planning to shift their manufacturing base from China, it is opportune time for India to bring policy changes for facilitating and catalysing manufacturing in India,” said a statement from the ministry.

Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and the Tuticorin Port Trust in Tamil Nadu have so far shown a keen interest in the proposal to establish designated renewable energy equipment manufacturing parks in the country.
