India to upgrade power grid for $30 billion

In an attempt to achieve non-fossil fuel based electricity, India has prepared a detailed plan to boost its inter-regional transmission capacity from 112GW to 150GW by the end of 2030.

The Ministry of Power in association with Central Electricity Authority constituted a committee including multiple organizations to work on “Transmission System for Integration of over 500 GW RE capacity by 2030”.

In consultation with the States and other stakeholders, the plan has identified major upcoming non-fossil fuel based generation centres which include few selected regions of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Ladakh. Based on their potential of power generation, the transmission systems have been planned.

Due to the lack of transmission lines, renewable electricity was unable to flow to urban and industrial hubs that are not capable of generating the sources. The plan includes building transformers and 8120 ckm of High Voltage Direct Current Transmission Corridors (+800kV and +350kV) to carry power for long distances as well as laying submarine cables to ship electricity from offshore wind pojects.

The Power Ministry announced in a tweet “India has emerged as one of the world leaders in Energy Transition with the fastest rate of growth of Renewable Energy capacities in the world”.

India’s current power generating capacity stands at 173GW from non-fossil fuel sources, with the onset of this plan, it aims to almost triple it to 500GW by 2030.
