India ships 1st red rice export consignment to US

India has dispatched its first consignment of ‘red rice’ on Thursday to the US. This iron-rich ‘red rice’ is grown in the Brahmaputra valley of Assam, without using any chemical fertilizer. The variety is also commonly known as ‘Bao-dhaan’, which is an integral part of Assamese food.

The rice is being sourced by leading exporter LT Foods. The export consignment was flagged off by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) Chairman Dr M. Angamuthu at Sonepat, Haryana. In a release, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry expressed confidence that as the exports of ‘red rice’ grow, it would help enhance incomes of farming families in the Brahmaputra flood plains.

Non-Basmati rice exports have surged remarkably during April to January, 2020-21, reaching Rs 26,058 crore during April-January, 2021 against Rs 11,543 crore during the same period in the previous year. Exports grew by 125% in Rupee terms and 115% in Dollar terms.
