To boost domestic availability, the government banned the export of broken rice at the beginning of September. Following a spike in retail prices, a 20% levy was placed on the export of non-basmati rice in an effort to boost domestic supplies.

The Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced in a notification that the rules in effect before to the September restriction will now apply to the export of organic non-basmati rice, including organic non-basmati broken rice.

During the months of April and September this fiscal, rice exports totaled USD 5.5 billion. In 2021–2022, it was USD 9.7 billion, according to data from the commerce ministry.

“India exports about 10,000-15000 tonnes of organic rice (basmatic and non basmati) annually. The exports of organic basmati and non-basmati rice was growing rapidly in the last 4-5 years and the government has taken the right step to lift the ban,” All India Rice Exporters Association past president Vijay Setia stated.
