Ban on single-use plastic from 1st July

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change notified on 28 June that single-use plastic will be banned across the country from 1st July. National and state level control rooms will be made for checking illegal manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of banned single-use plastic items.

“India will ban manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of identified single-use plastic items, which have low utility and high littering potential, all across the country from July 1, 2022,” the ministry said in a statement.

Single-use plastic has been an environmental challenge for all the countries with long-lasting effects on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021, have already banned the single-use plastic and carry bags having thickness less than seventy five microns. Plastic carry bags having thickness less thanone hundred and twenty microns will be prohibited with effect from the 31st December, 2022.
