2023 announced as International year of Millets

The UN General Assembly declared 2023 as the International Year of Millets. Through a general agreement of the members, the assembly adopted ‘International Year of Millets 2023’, post an India-led resolution. The resolution aims to increase awareness about the health benefits of millets and their suitability for cultivation under the changing climate.

The resolution was introduced by India with Nepal, Nigeria, Russia, Bangladesh, Kenya and Senegal. Furthermore, over 70 nations co-sponsored it. The General Assembly adopted the resolution with the agreement of all its members, announcing 2023 as the International Year of Millets.

T S Tirumurti, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador, said, “While millet cultivation has been historically widespread, their production is declining in many countries. There is an urgent need to promote the nutritional and ecological benefit of millets to consumers, producers, and decision-makers, to improve production efficiencies, research, and development investments and food sector linkages.” He further added that the initiative will help in making millet a key component in the food diet.
