California almond growers worried on Indian tariffs

California Senator Dianne Feinstein has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump for “damaging” trade ties with India. Her statement carries significance especially in context of India’s retaliatory tariff imposition on 29 US export products on January 16. One of the products is California almonds, whose exports to India are valued at US$ 650 million annually. Therefore, India’s tariff hike is expected to hurt almond growers in the state. Feinstein stated, “India just placed a 75% tariff on almonds in response to President Trump’s trade war. His actions are hurting Californians… The president must stop damaging trade relations with our allies.” The situation gets even more unpalatable for the almond growers considering that they are expecting a bumper crop in the upcoming production year.
