Indian Buffalo Meat Not Competitive with US Beef: USDA

June 28, 2016

According to United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), despite being the relatively cheap, Indian water buffalo meat exports are not competitive with the US beef exports primarily due to quality preferences and animal health regulations in the countries who imports buffalo meat from US and not from India.

According to a report, Indian buffalo meat do not fulfill the mandatory health standards requirements, including foot and mouth disease free status, obligatory in the most high income markets served by US. However in developing nations Indian buffalo meat is dearer as the preference is given to the low-cost product.

India’s buffalo meat exports would remain strong in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa as compared to the developed nations. The country may gain on opening of new markets, particularly Russia and China, suggested by USDA.
